Here is the third of four close-ups on the Autobot City concept art posted last month. You can see creases, and where some of the many sheets of paper that make up this monstrosity don't quite line up. Notice how massive the city is, compared to the already quite large shuttles. This thing clearly dwarfs the old volcano headquarters by a good order of magnitude.
I wonder what the ultimate decision not to utilize this design was? Perhaps it was too large and the cost of drawing it, along with the number of additional transformers it would have taken to fill it up (would have looked like a ghosttown with only the cast we saw in the film) made it unfeasible.
ReplyDeleteOr perhaps it was just too bad assed for the decipticons to defeat. :p
My money would be on it being too complex to animate, I guess... although the animation quality was quite high in the movie.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Hasbro decided that it didn't look enough like the in-development Metroplex toy, and wanted a more square-like city with towers instead.
Maybe Nelson Shin can tell us? :)
ReplyDeleteJim this art is great to see, thanks for making it available in these series of tubes.
Hey Jim thanks again for posting all of this tremendous artwork I really appreciate it. My inspiration is soaring.
ReplyDeleteJim, could you post also the transformation artwork of this great autobot city.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any more artwork of this city, except for the fourth close-up that I'll post on Monday. No Transformation sequence, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI worked as one of the animators of Transformers at Marvel Animation. I had seen the original designs of Dery in Transformers movie. The Autobot city transforms into battle mode with tank threads.
ReplyDeleteThe other unused Autobot city posted by Jim here transforms into battle mode with four outward sticking structures. It's an incredible design. I know I have a copy somewhere in my files. I'll send it to you Jim if I can find it.
Hello, Hoyos, thanks for stopping by. It's a real honor to have an actual animator visit this humble Blog. I was thrilled when Mr. Barras shared this design with me, and I've been fortunate enough to correspond with Mr. Dery from time to time. I'd love to hear from you, whether you have any designs or not. I can be reached at transformerstheark at yahoo dot com.
